Please call us at (865) 482-5614 to pre-register or to inquire about courses which may be added.

Marcay Dickens and Lisa Griggs

Marcay Dickens, left, and Lisa Griggs are two instructors who are offering group classes this summer

French Horn Ensemble
with Marcay Dickens

Emphasis is on ensemble playing, with technical instruction, sight reading, music theory and history. Intermediate and advanced students will enjoy working on open horn calls using the natural open horn as well as their own instruments in open position. For the advanced group, players need to be able to transpose from E flat music.

Ensemble groups will meet with Ms. Dickens once weekly.

  • Class sizes: Minimum 3, Maximum 8
  • Intermediate groups: One hour weekly
  • Advanced groups: One and a half hours weekly
  • Ages: Middle school through adult
  • Cost: $26 for Intermediate; $40 for advanced sessions for a 5 week session

Who Invented Music?
with Matthew Bak

Mr. Bak will take you on a guided tour, starting with the hot issues back 5000 years ago. Learn where our orchestra and band instruments came from! Find out how people started writing notes, and how scales evolved. Visit the Middle Ages, Classic Greece and Europe of the Baroque and Renaissance eras! Everything you ever wanted to learn about music history.

The class meets once weekly in the evening for 3/4 hour.

  • Class sizes: Minimum 5; maximum 10
  • Ages: Ages 12 and older
  • Cost: $26 for each 5 week session

Vocal Vibes
with Lisa Griggs

Sing Broadway, pops, opera and the latest Disney hits with the gang! Build up your confidence in singing and learn more about vocal control, stage presence and other aspects of pulling off a good tune. Lots of positive encouragement and constructive suggestions will build up your confidence in singing. Want private lessons but don’t know if it’s for you? This could be your stepping stone into private instruction.

Meets Tuesday and Thursday mornings for one hour each.

  • Class sizes: Minimum 8; maximum 12
  • Ages: Groups for Elementary and Middle School; High school and adult
  • Cost: $40 for each 5 week session

The Cello Crowd
with Nancy England

Tired of playing the same old plodding cello line in orchestra? Here’s your chance to really sing! Students will play works written or arranged for small and large groups of cellos. Whatta sound! Depending on level of advancement, they’ll share solo lines with one another. This wild and reckless fun will be augmented by exercises in how to listen to other parts while playing . . . a valuable talent which all orchestra and chamber music players need! Cello technique and some music theory will be offered.

Meets once weekly for 1 and 1/2 hours.

  • Class sizes: Minimum 3, Maximum 8
  • Ages: Grade 7 through adult (Minimum 2 years of study)
  • Cost: $40 for each 5 week session

Student Intern Program

In addition to our classes in music history, conducting, vocal training and individual instrument ensemble workshops, the music school will be offering a unique program aimed at beginning students who might like to see what music lessons are like, or if a particular instrument might be for them.

This "Lesson Sampler" program will be taught by supervised Music Arts students (our Student Interns) and costs only $6 for each half-hour private lesson, approximately half the cost of lessons with our regular professional instructors.

Music Arts has a great number of intermediate to advanced students, most of whom are high school age and have studied for many years. These students have expressed an interest in teaching and some are planning to major in music education in college.

Yes, you probably could get the kid down the street to give your child lessons.

The big difference in our program, however, is that each 30 minute lesson will be supervised for at least 5 minutes by our professional faculty. In this way, our Student Interns will have years of experience at their side. The faculty will be observing on a rotating basis, so that a variety of styles and teaching techniques can be tapped.

Beginning students may switch from one instrument to another, or from one Student Intern teacher to another during the Summer Session. However, the advice from our faculty is that your child should be willing to put in at least 6 lessons, in order to give the instrument a fair chance. If your child has already named his/her instrument, go with it. When in doubt, start with piano. It's a universal instrument and helps students visually understand the relationship between notes and how harmony is added.

There’s no deadline for registration, since private lessons are flexible and can be started or stopped at any time. However, we do recommend that you call early to be able to get the time spot that's closest to your needs.

Due to its popularity and success, the Student Intern program was expanded in 1999!
